DEATH OF R.I. STEELE

AGED WAUKON RESIDENT

"This community is again called upon to part with one if its early residents and esteemed citizens, Robert I. Steele, whose death occurred Tuesday at the University hospital in Iowa City, where he received treatment for several weeks for a gland ailment, from which he suffered for some years past.

A son of Mr. and Mrs. David Steel, he was born in Pennsylvania and would have attained his 85th birthday on September 14th next. The family came to this vicinity in 1864, settling on a farm northwest of Waukon, where he grew to manhood.

On January 15, 1896 his marriage to Miss Katherine Montgomery took place and Waukon became their home. In his young manhood Mr. Steele learned the art of photography which he practiced for many years in a gallery on the second floor of the building now owned by O'Brien Bros.

In 1923 the Steele home was erected on West Main Street, where he and his wife have resided, no children having been born to their union. Besides the bereaved widow, who was at his bedside during the closing hours of his life, he is survived by two brothers and a sister, Nelson Steele, Waukon; James Steele, Lake Andes, South Dakota; and Mrs. Mary Moore of Brookings, that state. Mr. Steele will be remembered by the older residents as a baseball enthusiast and considered as one of Waukon's high-ranking players. The remains were conveyed from Iowa City Tuesday night in the Bakke-Hanson hearse, and taken to their funeral home where services will be held Friday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. A.H. Grossheim. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery.
