Helen C. Winke, 80, of Waukon, died Thursday, march 2, 2000 at Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI following a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held Monday, March 6, 2000 at 11 a.m. at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon with Rev. James Walker officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Helen Charlotte Winke was born on September 22, 1919 in Paint Creek Township of Allamakee County, IA. Her parents were Carl and Hilda (Bakkum) Gilbertson. She was baptized and confirmed at the West Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church and graduated from Waterville High School in 1937. She worked for a time as a housekeeper in Chicago and later at Bakkum's grocery store. On October 14, 1944 she married Walter Winke at the West Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church. Together they farmed in the rural Waukon area until retiring and moving to town. Helen was a member of Zalmona Presbyterian Church and its ladies organizations as well as New Century Club. She was active in Farm Bureau Women and sang in the women's chorus and with a barbershop group for several years. She also served as a 4-H leader for many years.
Helen enjoyed gardening and was particular about her flowers (especially roses) and vegetables. She loved to spend time with her friends playing cards and bowling and was very fond of time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was an excellent cook and had a life-long love of music.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband Walter of Waukon, three daughters, Nancy & husband Robert Nenovich of Plymouth, MN, Ann & husband Phil Stone of Waukon, and Barbara & husband Robert Grahlman of Postville, one son, Kenneth & wife Debbie of Waukon, 10 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, 1 step-great-grandchild, a sister, Alta Hager, and a brother, Gordon & wife Donna Gilbertson, both of Waukon.
Honorary casketbearers were Stacy Stone, Shari Lubahn, Casey Winke, Brandi Grahlman and Kris Nenovich. Casketbearers were Tom & Mark Nenovich, Steve Stone, Chad Winke, Brian Grahlman and Troy Lubahn
