Benjamin "Ben" Winke, 93, of Waukon, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon, IA, following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Friday, April 28 at Zalmona Presbyterian church in rural Waukon, IA, with Rev. James Walker officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Benjamin Henry Winke was born November 27, 1906 on the Ludlow township, rural Waukon farm of his parents, Fred and Mary (Ludeking) Winke. He was baptized and confirmed at Zalmona Presbyterian Church and attended Ludlow #5 rural school as well as Waukon High School. On October 12, 1932 he married Amelia C. Selberg at her parents home in Waukon. Together they farmed for many years in Ludlow Township.
Ben was an active member of Zalmona Presbyterian Church where he formerly served as Elder, Deacon, and Trustee. He also served as Ludlow township Clerk, was on the election board, the Rural Fire Board, and the board of directors of Ludlow Telephone exchange. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, playing cards with friends, and traveling with his wife Amy. He also enjoyed keeping up with current affairs by reading the newspapers regularly.
Ben is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Amelia, two sisters, Mattie Becker and Esther Kruger, and a brother, Rueben Winke. Survivors include a son, Richard "Butch" and wife Mary Kay Winke of Waukon, two grandchildren, Dorothy Winke of Westminister, CO and Rick Winke of Waukon, and two sisters-in-law, Viola Winke and Vivian Selberg, both of Waukon.
Casketbearers were Neil Becker, Gary Winkie, Dennis Winkie, Merlin Kruger, Rev. Keith Selberg, Curt Selberg, Gerry DeBuhr and Dennis DeBuhr.
