Orville C. Welzel

Orville C. Welzel, 75, of 636 S. Webster St., a retired Naperville, Ill. coach and teacher, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1982 in Edward Hospital. He was born May 24, 1906 in Arkansas.

Welzel was graduated by the Postville High School in 1924 and attended Cornell College for four years and Columbia University for four summers.

Welzel taught in the Naperville High Schools from 1934 to 1972. During his teaching career, he taught mathematics, and coached football, basketball, and track, working with the late Coach John Harshbarager. In addition, he was an instructor in the driver education program.

Welzel was honored in the Cornell College Sports hall of Fame and the town of Naperville named its new athletic field in his honor.

Surviving are his wife, Helen L.; one son, Kippert C., and his wife Emilie, of Northbrook; one daughter, Marcia L. Welzel of Naperville; one brother, Gale Welzel of Prairie du Chien, Wis., one sister, Dolores Welzel of Wheaton; and three grandchildren.
