Inez Belle (Meyer) Schoonmaker
Inez Belle Meyer Schoonmaker, daughter of August Carl and Lena (Hulverson) Meyer, was born February 22, 1905, in Clayton County, near Elkader, Iowa. She died Saturday, April 20, 1996 at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville, Iowa. She was 91 years old.
She was baptized in the Congregational Church in Elkader. She graduated from Postville High School in 1922 and attended Upper Iowa University and Iowa State Teachers College where she earned a teaching certificate. She taught for over twenty years in various schools, including the Oak Hill School near Castalia, the Riceville and Clermont schools and in the Waterloo school system.
Inez was married to Daniel August Schoonmaker on July 17, 1935 in Waterloo, Iowa. To this union, two daughters were born. Inez and Dan lived in Cresco, Iowa Falls and Waterloo. She resided in Waterloo until 1989. Mrs. Schoonmaker was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, the Writers Guild and the Weavers Guild. She became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Postville in December of 1994.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Daniel, who died in 1960; a son-in-law, Donald Hatlestad; three brothers, Vernon Meyer, Orvel C. Meyer and Walter, who died as a child; two sisters, Esther (Mrs. George Schultz) and Vera (Mrs. Melvin Buddenberg). Surviving are her children, Mary Hatlestad of Lakewood, Colo., and Jane and her husband, Michael Becker, of Davenport; five grandchildren, Daniel Hatlestad and wife, Lesia, Douglas Hatlestad and wife, Karen, Jennifer and husband, Paul Weyman, Megan Becker and Nathan Becker; two great-grandchildren, Erik Hatlestad and Alec Hatlestad.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 22, 1996 at the Schutte Funeral Home in Postville. The Reverend Gary Dobbins officiated. Special music was provided by organist Joann Martins and soloist Kim Schutte. Casket bearers were Gordon Meyer, Robert Cowles, LaVern Stumme, Kenton Cowles, Bill Buddenberg and Alan Johnson. Arrangements were made by the Schutte Funeral Service of Postville. Interment was in the Pleasant View Cemetery at Castalia.
