Rev. Clifton M. Weihe
The Rev. Clifton M. Weihe, son of John C. and Caroline (Meyer) Weihe, was born October 21, 1916 on the family farm in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, near Postville, Iowa. He died February 17, 1995 in Santa Barbara, CA. He was 78 years old.
He graduated from Postville High School in 1934 and continued his education at Luther College in Decorah and the Philadelphia Lutheran Seminary. Between college and seminary, he was the supervisor of music in Lamberton, MN public schools.
The Rev. Weihe served congregations in Pennsylvania and California. For twelve years he was a director of the New York-based evangelism staff of the United Lutheran Church in America. He initiated and directed a five-year experimental mission of sixteen cooperating churches in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles.
On-the-job travel included most states and provinces of the United States and Canada, the Caribbean, British Guyana and a three-month study honorarium to observe post-war church outreach efforts in Western Europe. For six years he arranged three-month travel/study itineraries for overseas guest of his denomination.
He wrote for congregations, church publications and at times for the daily press, where he was conducting local or regional missions. He was the pastor of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Santa Maria, California, from 1972 to 1984, retiring in 1984. He served on the board of the United Way, the board of Friends of Ruth Shelter and the beginnings of the North Valley Community Project.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Florence who died in infancy, in 1907, three brothers, the Reverend LeRoy F. Weihe, Orville Weihe, and Clarence Weihe.
Surviving is his sister, Mrs. Viola Schultz of Postville and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held in Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Santa Maria, CA on Sunday, February 26, 1995. The Rev. Catherine Miller officiated.
A memorial service was also held Tuesday, February 28, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. The Rev. Charles W. Miller officiated. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of local arrangements. Interment will be in the Postville Cemetery.
