He attended "Dahl" rural elementary school, graduated from Waterville High School in 1926 and attended Iowa State University in Ames, where he studied engineering. After college he lived in Chicago for two years and then Lexington, KY for a year, where he worked for Armour Packing. From 1940 until 1945 Carlton served in the Army Air Force. He attained the rank of Technical Sergeant and saw duty in India and Burma while being awarded two Bronze Stars.
August 31, 1948 he married Loretta McGeough at St. Pius Catholic Church at Cherry Mound in rural Harpers Ferry.
