Larry B. McLeese, 71, of Harpers Ferry, Iowa, died Thursday, January 5, 2006, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City, Iowa. Memorial services were held Monday, January 9 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, Iowa, with Rev. Keith Selberg officiating. Burial of ashes with military rites was in Dunham Grove Cemetery, West Union, Iowa. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.
Larry Bruce McLeese was born March 2, 1934, in West Union, Iowa. His parents were Robert and Dorothea (Orr) McLeese. He attended elementary school in West Union and Hawkeye and graduated from McGregor High School in 1952. He attended the University of Iowa where he was a member of ROTC. From 1955 until 1958 Larry served in the US Army, including a tour of duty in Germany. On his return from the service, Larry attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette and graduated in 1963 with a degree in accounting.
Larry was a devoted caregiver to his parents for many years. He was an active member of American Legion Scenic Post 722 in Harpers Ferry, where he held numerous positions, as well as 40 and 8 Legion Group, the Eagles Lodge of Prairie du Chien, Wis., the National Rifle Association, and Ducks Unlimited. He also belonged to the Allamakee Sportsmans Club where he enjoyed trap shooting and taught hunter safety. He loved collecting guns and knives, often buying in need of repair and fixing them, and making his own knives which were often gifts for family members. Summers were spent at his river home where he enjoyed boating, duck hunting, and visiting and helping his neighbors.
Survivors include two sisters, Jeanine (Bob) Mathis of Harpers Ferry and Jananne (Curt) Selberg of Decorah; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins; and his faithful dog, Deke.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
