Sylvia Jane May, 83, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 1991, at her home in Clayton, Ia.
She was born Jan. 23, 1908 in New Albin to Roy and Lena (Hahn) Sires.
June 25, 1938 she married Ronald G. May in Dubuque. Most of their married life was lived in New Albin, Ia.. In 1962 they moved to Clayton.
Sylvia was a school teacher, having taught in several country schools in Allamakee County. After many years of attending college, she earned her bachelor's degree at age 62. She
taught second grade at Garnavillo until her retirement in 1973.She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Waukon, Ia., and for many years belonged to the Homemaker's Club in Clayton.
Surviving are her husband, Ronald "Pondo" May of Clayton; two sons, John of Clayton and James of Waukon; a daughter, Kathleen Brosius of Stoddard, Wisc.; and eight grandchildred. Also surviving are four sisters, Goldie Rocksvold, Emerald Grahlman, both of Waukon, Beryl Pokorny of Havanna, Ill., and Opal Britan of Lincoln, Neb.; and two brothers, Roy Thomas Sires of Eastman, Wisc., and Sardius Sires of Gleneden Beach, Ore.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26 in Thornburg Funeral Home, McGregor, Ia., with Elder Dave Keterson officiating. Burial was in the Clayton Cemetery.
