George A. Sweeney, 76, of 2509 Newport Dr. SW, died Friday evening, Jan. 19, 2007, in Mercy Medical Center following a brief illness. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, by Father Nils Hernandez. Burial: Saint John's Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Papich-Kuba Funeral Home East, where a rosary begins at 7 p.m.

George is survived by his wife of 56 years, Norma Jean; three children, Wanda Baker and husband Everett of Cedar Rapids, Denise Blake and husband Ralph of Phoenix, Ariz., and Gary Sweeney and wife Lori of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren, Eric Baker, Cheryl Mastin, Michael, Patrick and Kelly Blake, and Ryan, Karlee and Kellen Sweeney; four great-grandchildren, Brenden and Kyleigh Baker, and Dalton and Colten Mastin; two sisters, Betty Brummer and husband Florus of Cedar Rapids and Mary Nagel and husband Jim of Waukon; three brothers, Connie and wife Helen of Cedar Rapids, Gene of Waukon and Thomas and wife Linda of Prescott, Ariz.; and two sisters-in-law, Rose Mary Sweeney of Cedar Rapids and Annie Sweeney of Savanna, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh Sr. and Louise (Troendle) Sweeney; and two brothers, James and Hugh Sweeney.

George was born March 12, 1930, in Waukon, and had been a resident of Cedar Rapids since 1950. He married Norma Jean Mitchell at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Lycurgus, rural Waukon. George was employed as a welder at Iowa Steel and Iron Works Inc. for 10 years and had also worked as a truck driver for Hubbard Ice and Fuel Co. for 45 years, retiring in 1995.

He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and was a former member of the Parish Council. George was a member of Cadets of St. George Branch 45 F.C.S.L.A. (formerly Catholic Workmen). He enjoyed fishing and hunting, camping, doing yard work and just being outdoors.

George was dearly loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed. George's family would like to thank Sister Peg and Sister Nina and the Seventh Floor staff of Mercy Medical Center for the wonderful care they gave George during his final illness.
