Mrs. Joanna Kathryn (Strauch) Hughes, daughter of Andrew A. and Margaret (Queckboerner) Strauch, was born on a farm near Chadwick, Illinois, on October 10, 1876.
She attended rural schools and was graduated from the Chadwick high school. After teaching for several years, she was married to Francis W. Hughes in 1898. They started in the newspaper publishing business in Mt. Carroll, Illinois, and later at Sabula, then the Elgin Echo from 1902 to 1923, and last at Postville, all in Iowa.
After the death of Mr. Hughes in 1926, she sold the Herald and retired. She lived for a short time in Elgin, later at Mt. Carroll, Illinois, and her last home was in Chadwick, Illinois.
During her active years Mrs. Hughes participated in social, civic and fraternal activities as a member of the Methodist Church, Eastern Stars and social clubs.
Mrs. Hughes had been an invalid for several years and died November 7, 1967 at a hospital in Freeport. She had been a patient there since October 13.
Surviving are three brothers and three sisters. They are Oswald Strauch, Billings, Montana, Clara Strauch, California, Richard Strauch, Elgin, Mrs. W. T. (Hilda) Rudoff, Minneapolis, Berta Strauch, Vista, California, and Donald Strauch, Mesa, Arizona. One brother, Bernard Strauch, died recently.
Attending the funeral from this area were Mrs. Robert Schultz, Luana, Mrs. Margaret Waters, Decorah, Mrs. Paul Waters, Postville, and Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Strauch. Berta Strauch accompanied them home and visited until Sunday. She had been with Mrs. Hughes at the hospital.
