Young Farmer Killed in Crash; Iowa Toll is 613
Waukon – The death of a 27 year old Allamakee county farmer shortly before midnight Tuesday pushed Iowa’s 1953 motor vehicle death toll to 613-equaling the state’s second highest death toll set in 1931.
The record year for traffic deaths in Iowa was 1951 when 625 persons were killed.
The 612th Traffic fatality was Wayne Sweat, who farmed with his father about 20 miles south of Waukon.
Sweat was killed when the car in which he was riding went out of control on Volley hill about 14 miles southwest of Waukon. He was pinned under the machine which overturned in a ditch.
The driver of the car Elden Dahl of Postville, and three other passengers suffered only minor injuries.
It was the third traffic death of the year in Allamakee county.
