ELDO SCHUTTE
Funeral services for Eldo Schutte were held Thursday, September 24, 1998, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Rev. T. M. Marks officiated. Marian Schutte was the organist. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.
Eldo Henry Schutte, the son of Frederick and Lina Minna Dorothea (Schroeder) Schutte was born September 4, 1899, at Hardin in Clayton County, near Luana, Iowa. He passed away late Sunday night, September 20, 1998, in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa. He had reached the age of 99 years and 16 days.
He was baptized into the Lutheran faith as an infant and was confirmed March 16, 1913 in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, by the Reverend Kuhne. Eldo attended the country school near his home. On November 29, 1927 Eldo was married to Verla Melinda Willman in the Presbyterian Church in Postville. To this union five children were born, Marvin, Betty, Marlen, Joan, and Mary Jane. The couple lived in the Castalia and Postville areas where they farmed. In his early years, Eldo hauled cream with a wagon and a team of mules. Later he did carpenter work, building barns in the area. In 1967 Eldo and Verla retired to Postville. He enjoyed town life, working in his garden and often went to the farm to help Sam and Joan. He enjoyed visiting with people and could often recall stories and dates that others had long forgotten. Eldo became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center on March 8, 1995.
He is survived by his wife, Verla, two daughters, Betty and husband, Wayne Timmerman, of Decorah, IA, Joan and husband, "Sam" (Romandus) Gisleson, of Luana, IA, one son, Marlen Schutte and wife, Darlene of Postville, Ia., five grandchildren, Melonee Nichols and husband, David, of Cedar Rapids, IA, Lynne Payne and husband Chad of DeGraff, MN, Michael Gisleson of Luana, IA, David Gisleson of North Liberty, IA, and his friend, Stacie Sweeney, of Iowa City, and Fred Schutte and wife, Kerri, of Urbana, IA; six great-grandchildren, Kelsey Gisleson, Samantha and Allison Payne, Bryce Schutte and Noah and McKenzie Schutte.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a son, Marvin, who died in infancy, a daughter, Mary Jane, who died in 1943, three brothers, Louis, Arnold, and Emmett ("Pete"), one sister, Ceasil (Mrs. Eldo Gericke), and a son-in-law, Earl Ruckdaschel.
Eldo was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville where he had ushered and served on the church Council.
Casket bearers were Michael Gisleson, Fred and Kerri Schutte, David Gisleson, Chad and Lynne Payne, David and Melonee Nichaols, and Carol Jones.
