Adolph W. Ruen, 93, of Waukon, died Tuesday, August 20, 2002, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Saturday, August 24, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. at Glenwood Lutheran. Church, rural Decorah, with Pastor Susan Debner officiating. Burial was in the Pontoppidan Cemetery, rural Decorah. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted with arrangements. Adolph Wilhelm Ruen was born on December 11, 1908, on the Glenwood Township, rural Decorah farm of his parents, Olaus and Amanda (Egge) Ruen. He was a life-long member of the Pontoppidan and Glenwood Lutheran churches where he was baptized and confirmed and later held various offices. He attended the rural Glenwood #5 "Lee" School. On May 23, 1935, he married Harriet A. Onsager at the St. John's Lutheran Church parsonage in Waukon. Adolph farmed the Ruen home farm in the rural Glenwood area all of his life. He also sold Pioneer seed corn. He was a member of the Gauken Norwegian Men's Choir, a former 4-H leader, and a director of the Glenwood #5 rural school district. Adolph enjoyed woodworking and cabinetry, gardening and raising flowers, fishing, feeding the birds, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye basketball fan. His favorite times were spent with his family and watching their activities, Adolph is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Harriet; a grandson, Steven Hermeier; and three brothers, Laurence, Olger, and Vernon. Survivors include a son, Robert (Wanita) Ruen of Decorah; three daughters, Helen (Rev. Allen) Hermeier and Diane (Norbert) Lovstuen, both of Decorah, and Lucille (Dean) Christianson of Owatonna, Minn.; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Otto Ruen of Decorah; and a sister, Eleanor Blegen of Bismark, N.D. Honorary casketbearers were Robert Clasen, Julian Landsom, Ingeman Teslow, Vernon Olson, Howard Ruen, Ozzie Quandahl, and Arnold Dahlen, Sr. Casketbearers were John Hermeier; Rob Ruen; Eric Christianson; and Aaron, Nick, and Darren Lovstuen.
