Mavis C. Cook

Mavis C. Cook, 88, of Waukon, died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2006 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, following a brief illness. Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 6 at 10 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial was held in Miles City Cemetery.

Mavis Charlotte Cook was born December 26, 1917 in the Lafayette Township, rural Harpers Ferry, farm of her parents, Theodore and Oline (Hunstad) Pladsen. She was baptized and confirmed at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church, rural Waterville. She attended rural Allamakee County elementary schools before graduating from Waterville High School in 1935. While in school she played on their state qualifying basketball team. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls to earn her teaching certificate and BSE degree. After college Mavis taught school for several years in Allamakee County, Miles, and Marshalltown.

July 2, 1961 she married Kenneth Cook at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church. She continued her teaching career in Clinton, and retired after a total of 43 years in the classroom. She then moved back to Waukon in 1984.

Mavis was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where she was involved in Ladies Circle and served on several committees. She was also a member of the New Century Club, ISEA, Retired Teachers Group and was active in adopt a grandparent program for 18 years. While in Miles she was a member of Eastern Star. Mavis was involved in the Republican Party in Jackson and Allamakee Counties. She enjoyed taking care of her cat Max, reading, working crossword puzzles, visiting and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include her daughter, Sara (Marv) Hankemeier of Miles; a granddaughter, Dorice Hankemeier of Anderson, IN; two sisters-in-law, Carol Kaufman of Clinton, and Aleon DeVore of Denver, CO; and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth, who died in 1972; five sisters, Valborg Adams, Agnes Pladsen, Rosella Tuberty, Alphild O'Brien and her twin sister, Carrol Kiesau; three brothers, Joseph, Melvin and Wallace Pladsen.

Casketbearers were Denny Rehder, Kenneth Pladsen, Steve Kiesau, and Roger, Cletus and Gary Pladsen.
