I'm not related to the deceased. Obituary is from my grandma's scrapbook.
Robert G. Hartley was born April 11, 1917 at the rural New Albin farm of his parents, George P. and Grace (Rowe) Hartley. He attended rural Allamakee County schools, graduated from Waukon High School and attended two years at Waukon Junior College.
Robert died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1993 in Veterans Memorial Hospital; he was 75.
Aug. 22, 1939 he and Loretta Wild were married at Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church; Loretta died Nov. 5, 1973. Bob and Pearl Brown were married March 25, 1977 at First Presbyerian.
Most of his life was spent in Allamakee County except for two years (around 1960) when he lived in Dubuque. He was a farmer most of his life, but had also worked in insurance sales, real estate, and for a short time in photography while living in Dubuque. The past nine years, he and Pearl had spent the winters in Texas.
He was a member of Waukon Kiwanis, First Presbyterian where he held several offices, and former president and longtime board member of Winneshiek Mutual Insurance.
Surviving are his wife Pearl; a daughter, Janice Hartley of Lansing; a son and his wife, Robert and Linda Hartley of Lansing; two step-daughters, Nancy Swenson of Bellingham, WA and Linda Swenson of Toledo, OH; three steps.ons and their wives, Robert and Karen Swenson and Lou and Rita Swenson, all of Waukon, and Norbert and Cathy Swenson of Prairie du Chien, WI; two grandchildren and eight step-grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a brother Grant.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 25 at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon with burial in Oakland Cemetery. The Rev. Larry Olson conducted the 1:30 p.m. services. Martin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Casket bearers were Robert, Norbert and Lou Swenson, and John, George and Glenn Hartley.
