Helen Esther was born January 25, 1918, in rural Lansing, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Anna (Lenz) Steiber. She attended the "Russell" rural school near Wexford, graduated from Lansing High School, and attended a year of college in Galesville, Wis.
April 10, 1941, she married Marvin Gustave Schulze at Calvary Evangelical Church in Lansing. Helen taught school for many years at several rural Lansing locations. She was a busy homemaker and mother of two, but also worked alongside Marvin for 35 years on their rural Lansing farm until they retired and moved to Waukon in 1980.
Helen was a former 4-H leader and volunteer at Makee Manor. She also taught Sunday School and was active in circles at church in Lansing and at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Waukon. She loved to garden and raise flowers, especially roses, African violets, and ferns. Needlework, quilting, tolle and ceramic painting, and crafts were some of her other hobbies. Helen also enjoyed music and liked to play the organ. She collected recipes and was an excellent baker, often making and decorating cakes for friends and family. When she had time to relax she enjoyed exploring genealogy and looking at old family pictures, playing games with her grandchildren, or sitting down with the latest issue of Readers Digest.
Survivors include two children, Robert (Shirley) Schulze of Waukon and Janet (Larry) Jarchow of San Gabriel, Calif.; five grandchildren, Krista (Brian) McKee, Denise (Brent) Beyer, James Schulze, and Robert (Michelle) and Robin Jarchow; and four great-grandchildren, Claire and Brady Beyer and Ryan and Cassidy Jarchow.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Marvin, who died in 1989; and three brothers, Raymond, Leslie, and Donald Steiber.
