Stanley W. Ewing, 76, of Waukon, Iowa, died peacefully Sunday morning, July 16, 2006, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 19, at 1:30 p.m. at Rossville Presbyterian Church in Rossville, Iowa, with Pastor Tom Buresh officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Waukon. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Stanley William Ewing was born May 28, 1930, in Dark Hollow in Franklin Township, rural Luana, Iowa, on the farm of his parents, Charles and Florence (Roffman) Ewing. He attended rural elementary school in Franklin Township. Stan farmed with his father for several years.

May 28, 1949, Stan married his childhood sweetheart Darlene “Boots” Schlitter on her parents’ farm, the home of Frederick and Geneva Schlitter. From 1951 to 1970, Stan and Boots farmed south of Rossville where they raised their two daughters, Sharon and Sue. It was during this time that Stan made cheese for Volney Cheese Factory and hauled milk and whey. He was self-employed as a stock hauler and drove school bus for the Waukon Public School District. Stan also worked with Francis Garrett setting up mobile homes. In 1970 he and Boots sold the family farm to his oldest daughter and son-in-law. After retiring from farm life they moved to Waukon where Stan obtained his real estate license and later his broker’s license, founding Ewing Real Estate. Although the Ewing name soon became synonymous with selling real estate, auctioneering was Stan’s greatest love. Over the years he partnered with George Ashbacher and Eldon Troester. He was an auctioneer until his death.

Stan was a member of Rossville Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder. He will be remembered and honored as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. A self-taught man, he instilled the importance of work and integrity in his family members. But above all else, Stan will be remembered for the love he showed his family, especially Boots, his wife of 57 years. Many weekends were spent listening and dancing to area music groups, taking a drive, or just enjoying each other’s company. Stan also enjoyed collecting antiques and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene “Boots” of Waukon; two daughters, Sharon (Doug) Kubitz of Monona, Iowa, and Sue (Dave) Burroughs of Waterville, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Bob (Tracy) Kubitz of Monona, Shelley Kubitz of Northfield, Minn., Ryan Schulte of Iowa City, Iowa, Tracy Schulte of Waukon, Mike Burroughs of Prairie du Chien, Wis., Danielle Burroughs of Waukon, and Mitchell Burroughs of Harpers Ferry; four great-grandsons, Kyle, Jordan, Cody, and Joseph; three sisters, Deloris Mosier, Phyllis Welch, and Kay (Darrell) Snitker, all of Waukon; two sisters-in-law, Marcella Ewing of Corvallis, Ore., and Ann Ewing of Waukon; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He is also survived by his “grand puppy” Skeeter.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and William “Bill” Ewing; two brothers-in-law, Ambrose Welch and Karl Mosier; a nephew, Greg Mosier; and his great-nephew, Bryce David.

Honorary casketbearers are Virgil and LaVon Martins, Don and Rita Larson, George and Belva Ashbacher, Eldon and Lorna Troester, and Vernon and Bunny Melcher. Casketbearers are Dan Hansmeier, LuAnn Looney, Mary Axmear, Tim Welch, Dusty and Darren Snitker, and LouAnn Bucheit.
