David Snitker

David D. Snitker, 73, of Waukon, IA, died Friday, June 30, 2006 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 5, at 11 a.m. at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon, with Pastor Judy Scheer officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be held in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 4 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

David Daniel Snitker was born August 1, 1932 in Ludlow Township, rural Waukon, IA, the son of Leonard LeRoy and Wilhelmina “Minnie” (Flage) Snitker. He was baptized and confirmed at Salem UCC. Dave attended elementary school in Ludlow Township and graduated from Waukon High School in 1950. Dave served in the United States Air Force as a staff sergeant from 1950 to 1954 during the Korean War.

June 24, 1956 he married Janet Larsen at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church rural Waukon. Dave and Janet farmed in Ludlow and Jefferson Township for many years. He also owned and operated Dave’s Feed and Farm Supply “on the strip” in Rossville, IA. Dave served as an Allamakee County Supervisor from 1987 until he retired in 1998. He loved serving as a county supervisor and working with and for the people of Allamakee County. He also served on many county boards.

Dave was a lifetime member of Salem United Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon and on many boards and committees. He also served on the Waterville Coop Creamery Board, Rural Fire Board, Jefferson Township Board and was a member of the VFW. Dave enjoyed visiting and spending time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren. He also took great pride in attending and supporting his grandchildren in their activities. Dave also enjoyed golfing, traveling and running in several local races. He had several collections of hats, coins, buttons and baseball cards. Dave had an accident where he was burned over 80 percent of his body which inspired him to write a book “I Can Make It One More Day.” God was number one in Dave’s life as he witnessed his great faith.

Survivors include his wife, Janet of Waukon; his children, Bob Snitker, Julie (Larry) Magner, Laurie (Terry) Welch, Herb (Julie) Snitker, all of Waukon and Jubal (Stacey) Snitker of St. Charles, MN; 15 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 4 brothers, Lloyd (Joyce) of Frankville, DuWayne (Laurayne) of Waukon, Earl (Mary Lou) of Oceanside, CA and Dennis (Patty) of New Port Richey, FL; 2 sisters, LaVonne Brandt of Frankville and Jane C. Snitker of Waukon; 2 sisters-in-law, Loretta Snitker and Phyllis Snitker both of Waukon. He is preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Kevin Magner; 3 brothers, Donald, Leonard Junior and infant LeRoy.

Honorary Casketbearers are his grandchildren Bobbi Sue, Makenna, Carter, Jessica, Jordan, Kenzi, Jayden and Sage Snitker, Jamie Riley, Darren, Crystal and Tami Magner, Jaime, Cole and Ramsey Welch. Casketbearers are Terry Welch, Larry Magner, Arlyn Fossum, Frank Sivesind, John Prestemon and Roger Hesse.
