Leo Henry Meyer
Leo Henry Meyer, 74, Lakehills, TX, passed away at Poudre Valley Hospital, Fort Collins, CO, May 13, 2002. He was born in Postville, IA on Sept. 4, 1927, the son of Helmuth and Florence Eggert Meyer. He attended Postville Schools and graduated in 1945. Following high school he served with the US Army of Occupation in Germany, 1945-1947. Following his Honorable Discharge he attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and Arizona State University, Tempe, studying Light Building Industry in the School of Architectural Engineering.Leo married Elinor Englehorn on June 18, 1950 at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Lansing, Iowa. They are the parents of two daughters, Valerie Girard (Anthony), Albuquerque, NM, and Jodi Meyer, San Antonio, Texas.
Leo spent a lifetime in the building materials trade, managing retail lumber yards in East Dubuque, IL and Oregon, IL. In 1956 he moved to Phoenix, AZ where he sold building materials for US Gypsum Co., and wholesale lumber for Kaibab Lumber Co. and American Forest Products. In 1968 he was sent to San Antonio, TX to open a wholesale division for American Forest Products. Upon retiring he began Meyer Inspection Service in San Antonio and did home inspections in the area for 15 years. He was a respected business man and leaves many friends in the building trades.
In 1993 he moved to Lakehills, TX on Medina Lake and built his retirement home. Summers for the next 9 years were spent at the YMCA of the Rockies, Estes Park, CO, where he was a valued employee and friend to all.
Leo was a lifelong devout Lutheran presently belongin to Grace Lutheran Church, Bandera, TX. He was also a member of the Davy Crockett Masonic Lodge, San Antonio, TX, and the Hoo-Hoo Club Lumbermen's Fraternity.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Elinor, and his daughters Jodi Meyer and Valerie Girard, granddaughters Alyssa and Alexis Girard, sisters Doris Embretson (Paul) and Mary Thompson (Allen) both of Springfield, MO. Also 3 nephews and 2 nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service was held on May 14, 2002 at the Hyde Chapel, YMCA of the Rockies. In addition, a service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, Bandera, TX on July 28, 2002, at 3 p.m. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lansing, IA, on August 9, 2002 at 10 a.m. Masonic rites and military honors will be held.
