James Grant Sires, son on John and Catherine Sires, was born January 3, 1886, in Dorchester, and went to his eternal rest Tuesday, September 5, 1967, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Waukon, at the age of 81 years, 8 months and 3 days.
His early years of life were spent at English Bench, a place which remained close to his heart throughout the years.
On February 8, 1906, he was united in marriage to Sarah Jane Hahn of Dorchester. To this union were born 8 children, 5 sons and 3 daughters. Their early years of marriage were spent on a farm of the groom's father in Union City Township. From there they moved to New Albin where he has since made his home.
As a resident of New Albin, he was engaged in the plumbing and heating, and papering and painting trade--a trade which he followed until shortly before his death.
He was an active member of the Methodist Church where he served for many years as a Sunday School Superintendent, as an official Board member, and a member of the male quartet. Early in life he accepted Christ as his Savior, and became a firm believer in the Word of God. From then on his main goal in life was to be a witness and testimony for his Lord. It was his privilege to bring joy and comfort to many by singing for over 320 funerals throughout the area.
He was preceded in death by his wife, a son Donald who died in infancy, his parents, five brothers and one sister.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his immediate family, Mrs. Elmer (Ruby) Middendorf of Caledonia, MN, Mrs. Joe (Eleanor "Mae") Crowley, Alvin "Bud", Raymond "Tat", and Cleon, all of New Albin, Mrs. Claude (Genevieve "Jenny") Grahlman of Waukon, and Forrest "Frosty" of Tulare, SD, 3 brothers, Frank of Olympia, WA, Roy of Hawkeye, IA and Dan of New Albin, 13 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren, besides a host of relatives and friends.
The funeral services were held at Grace Methodist Church in New Albin at 2:00pm, Friday, September 8, conducted by Rev. E. Nielsen of Albion and Rev. Tanaka, local pastor, with burial in English Bench cemetery. The pallbearers were John Mendenhall, Frank Weymiller, Frank Beardmore, Joe Beardmore, Alton Bulman and Francis Howes.
Sooner or later, Cares will have flown,
Sunshine and gladness we'll see;
Sooner or later, God calleth his own,
With Him forever to be.
Sooner or later, yes, sooner for some,
Darkness will all then be past;
Sooner or later, our Savior will come,
With Him will your lot be cast?
