Oliver J. Fay, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Oliver J. Fay is one of Iowa’s most successful surgeons. He was born near Postville, Iowa, July 2, 1874, a son of James McCoy and Elizabeth (Schreimer) Fay, the former a native of Pennsylvania and the latter of Ohio. James McCoy Fay came to Iowa in 1850 and in 1868 married Elizabeth Schreiner, who had been a resident of the state since 1855. They made their home near Postville until the death of the father in 1902; the mother is still living and now resides in Postville, Iowa.

Dr. Fay supplemented his public-school education by a course at Iowa State College, from which he was graduated in 1898 with the degree of Bachelor of Science. He determined to make the practice of medicine his life work and completed the medical course in the University of Illinois, Chicago, in 1902. He supplemented his medical course by serving a two years’ internship in the Augustana Hospital, Chicago, on the service of Dr. A.J. Ochsner, and then established himself in Des Moines, limiting his work to the practice of surgery.

Dr. Fay was united in marriage with Miss Helen Louise Knapp, March 17, 1904, at Lake Charles, Louisiana. Mrs. Fay is the daughter of Maria Hotchkiss and Dr. Seaman A. Knapp, at one time president of Iowa State College, and later connected with the department of agriculture at Washington, D.C.; neither the Doctor nor Mrs. Knapp are now living. Dr. and Mrs. Fay have two daughters, Helen Louise and Mary Elizabeth.

Dr. Fay is a member of the County and State Medical Societies, of the American Medical Association and the Western Surgical Association, and a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. His interests are so centered in his professional work that he has little time to devote to any outside activities.
