August Blumhagen was born Sept. 14, 1840 in Sandow, Mecklenberg Schwerin, Germany. In 1865 he came to the United States with the John Sass family. In 1868, he married Wilhelmine Gebat. Wilhelmine Gebat has no family and came alone to the United States. She started out in New York, and stopped several places along the way until she came to Postville where she worked in a millinery shop. She liked it so well in Postville, that she stayed. The first 4 years they lived on the Williams farm in Fayette County. In 1872, August purchased a farm in Bloomfield Township that is still owned by a grandson, Elmer Blumhagen of Postville, Iowa. August and Wilhelmine Blumhagen were the parents of 5 children. Mrs. Blumhagen died Sept. 9, 1918. August Blumhagen died Jan. 1926. Children were Fred, John, Millie, Anna and Sophia.
