Allamakee Centenarian. Holver Hanson Celebrated His One Hundredth Birthday Monday, Jun 14th at Home Near Waukon

The Martin Holverson home on Round Prairie, near Waukon, was the scene of an unusual and notable gathering Monday, the 14th inst., when friends, relatives and neighbors to the number of nearly five hundred gathered to celebrate the one hundredth birthday anniversary of Mr. Holverson's father.

It is a long span, measured either in years or in the events in the great drama of the world's progress, since June 14, 1809, when Holverson Hanson was born in Torporland, Norway; but the old gentleman had kindly greeting and hearty hand grasp for all who joined in the festivities, and enjoyed the doings of the day with zest and enthusiasm.

He is in fairly good health, about like the average man of eighty, and sat outside of the door, in a luxurious arm chair presented him by his guests, to be photographed in a group with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren -- four generations.

Mr. Hanson landed at Quebec with his wife and family on his forty-eighth birthday, fifty-two years ago, coming direct to Makee township, where he has made his home ever since.

His wife died about ten years ago and is buried in the Old West Paint Creek cemetery.

Of his immediate family, only one, Martin Holverson, one of the most prominent Scandinavian citizens of this county, alone resides. Chris Holverson, another son, a lively youngster of seventy-four years, came from Canton, South Dakota, to assist in celebrating the occasion under the parental roof-tree. A daughter, living in North Dakota, was represented by her two sons.

~Decorah Public-Opinion, June 23, 1909; pg 6

Note: His wife was Ingeborg Karine Nilsdtr, who died in 1900. Although his name is on a gravestone in Old West Paint Creek cemetery, a DOD was not engraved. A note attached to the photo of his gravestone on the Iowa Gravestone Photo Project gives his DOD as 3/6/1910 in Makee twp.
