Peter Welch married Ann Elizabeth Lyons in Kill Parish, County Kildare, Ireland on October 4, 1848, before sailing to America.

The first record of the Welch family in the United States was the 1850 Federal Census. Peter, Ann and their first American born child Mary Ann, were living in Hamilton County, Ohio. Peter listed his occupation as a laborer.

The family moved west and settled in French Creek, Allamakee County, Iowa by 1856. Peter owned a one hundred twenty acre farm in Section 22,of French Creek. The Welch’s were the parents of five children.

Mary Ann (1850-1926) married James Knox Polk Spence (1844-1910)

Rose Anne (1851-1936) married Thomas Deviney (1846-1926)

James P. (1853-1943) married Mary Lycet (1863-1913)

Elizabeth (1857- unknown)

John Thomas (1860-1941) married Ann Teeling (1866-1935)
