PETER HELIN was born in Hudok-Sweell, in the northern part of Sweden, July 8, 1842, and is a son of John and Margaret (Johnson) Peterson. He immigrated to the United States in 1867 and located in Henry county, Ill., working there at his trade as a blacksmith. After about a year he removed to Lansing, Allamakee county, Ia.,
where he remained for two years, and then again changed his residence to a point about twenty miles from Lansing where he lived for four years.

Subsequently he removed to Minnesota, remaining
four years, and then returned to Iowa, locating about ten miles from Lansing where he established a shop of his own and remained until
about 1892, when he came to La Crosse and here followed his trade as he had done at all of the places where he had previously located.

Recently he has practically retired from the active work, but still retains the supervision.

Mr. Helin was married in Iowa to Betsey Lund, daughter of John Lund, of that state. They have had a family of five children of whom four are living. Emert is a machinist in Waterloo, Ia.; Verner is a painter in Chicago. Both of these sons are married and the former has a family of four children. Esther and Eva, twins, are unmarried and reside with their parents. Elliot
died at the age of eight years.

In politics, Mr. Helin is a supporter of the Republican party. The family are members of the Norwegian Baptist church.
