PETER L. BARTHELD was born in Allamakee county, Ia., June 16, 1866, the son of Fred and Philipina (Ziemmermann) Bartheld, natives of Germany. They immigrated to the United States in 1854 and were married in Cleveland, Ohio, coming from that place to Lansing, Ia., the same year. Mr. Bartheld was a cabinet maker by trade but in his later life was a contractor. He died on July 21, 1896, but his wife is still living, making her home with her children.
Mr. Peter Bartheld was educated at Village Creek, Ia., four miles from Lansing, and has been in the grocery business for twenty-two years. He began at Lansing, serving for a year as a clerk in the store of Schaldach & Schwalbe; was then for a year and a half in Chicago, and has been in business for nineteen years in La Crosse in the same line. For the past twelve years he has been a partner in the firm of F. A. Schaldach & Co., which has a large trade with the farming community and especially with those of the same nationality, both in the city and surrounding country.
On Oct. 27, 1892, Mr. Bartheld married Emma Schubert, daughter of Wenzel Schubert, of La Crosse. Mrs. Bartheld was born in Houston, Minn., and her family moved to La Crosse when she was two years old. She was reared a Catholic and attended a Catholic school. They have two children, Alvin W., born March 22, 1894, and
Leslie Peter, born Oct. 11, 1898, both in La Crosse.-pg 242-243
