The Henry Fords
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ford and family came to Milk River in April, 1917 from Watertown, Minn. Mr. Ford was foreman for the Ponsford-Hanscomb Ranch, six miles east of Milk River. There were two Ponsford brothers and a sister, Mrs. Hanscomb, who owned the farm. After managing the farm for a few years Mr. Ford rented the farm from the company. He bought land on the boundary east of Coutts in 1927. The company then disposed of the farm to Andrew Nett that same year. On March 25, 1928, the Fords moved to their own place at Coutts.
Henry S. Ford was born in 1867 in Terra Haute, Indiana. His father, Henry Ford, and his mother, Elizabeth Blakely Ford, were also born in Terre Haute. Henry married Lillie Bell Church on December 14, 1899 in Chamberlain, South Dakota. She was born in 1882 at Postville, Iowa.
To the Fords six children were born, John, Henry, Walter Roscoe, Russell C., Alice Mae, Everett Merrill and Orville DeWayne. John (Jack) married Ada Nilsson; Walter married Virginia B. Gow; Russell married Lois Campbell Leffingwell; Alice Mae married Henry John Hacke; Everett married Lucy Lippa and DeWayne married Margaret Campbell McLachlan.
Mr. Ford died on November 1, 1935. Mrs. Ford, with the help of her youngest son DeWayne, carried on the farm operations.
