James McCarty Family
James McCarty was born in County Kerry, Ireland, in 1826. He married Mary Sullivan who was born in Ireland in 1830. James died in 1902 and was buried in St. Jacob’s Cemetery at Graettinger.
They immigrated to the United States and first lived in Indiana where Catherine was born in 1855. They then lived in Wisconsin where Patrick was born. By 1860, they have moved to Iowa. They lived first in Clayton County and then in Alamakee [sic] County where Ellen, Mary, John, Julia, James, Dennis, Eugene, Bridget, Johanna and Thomas were born. The dates of birth were from 1860 to 1878.
They later moved to Emmet County, Iowa. The only one of the twelve children to remain in the Graettinger area was Eugene who was also known as Jay. Jay married Margaret O’Connor. They farmed in the Graettinger area and later retired in Graettinger. They are both deceased and are buried in St. Jacob’s Cemetery at Graettinger.
