C.I. Crawford - governor-elect of SD

C.I. Crawford, governor-elect of South Dakota, was born at Volney, Allamakee county, Ia., January 14, 1858. He was educated at Rossville, Ia., and graduated at law at the University of Iowa in 1882. He married Miss May Robinson in 1884. He began the practice of law at Independence, Ia., in 1883. He lived at Huron, S.D. from 1884 to 1897 and is the head of the law firm of Crawford & Taylor. From 1886 to 1888 he was the state's attorney for Hughes county. In 1889 he was elected a member of the territorial council. He was a member of the state senate in 1890. He was elected attorney general of South Dakota in 1892. He is a Presbyterian and a devoted church member.

[transcribers note: The family of Robert & Sarah Crawford (both born in Ohio) appears on the 1860 census in Franklin twp. Volney, Allamakee co. Iowa. Their children: James S., John C., Joseph H., Cora I., and Jennie M. were all born in Iowa with the exception of the eldest son, who was born in Ohio. On the 1870 census, the family is still in Franklin twp. and has grown to include Nathan, Robert, Effie, Rolla & Oren.]
