OBITUARY

Charles Gerard, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Gerard, was born near Corning, Iowa, April 7, 1871, and died at the hospital in Rochester, Minn., September 4, 1930, aged 58 years, 4 months and 27 days. He grew to manhood on the old home place.

He was united in marriage to Marie Anderson at Corning, Iowa, on Dec. 24, 1895. To this union three children were born, Donald A., Harry T. and Marie Lynette, all of Lyman county. He farmed in Iowa for two years and in 1897 moved to Brunswick, Nebr., remaining there until 1906, when he came to Lyman county, homesteading on a farm south of Kennebec. In 1909 he went back to Corning in order to give his children better school facilities. After his children completed their high school education the family moved back to the farm in 1919 and this has been their home ever since.

During all the years of his life he was a man of exemplar character. He was ambitious and frugal and through his efforts came into possession of a large amount of land. He was a member of the County Commissioners of Lyman county for a period of four years. He is a man who will be greatly missed in the community for he gave freely of his energy to promote its interests and had an abiding faith in the development of the west river country.

Besides his wife and children, and two grandchildren, he is survived by five brothers, Frederick, of Fontanelle, Iowa; Arsene of Villisca, Iowa; Peter A. of Nevada, Mo., Felix E. of Corning, Iowa, and Theodore, of Kennebec, S. D. His parents and two elder brothers, William E. of Keystone, S. D., and A. J., of Las Vegas, N. M., preceded him in death.

Those from a distance attending the funeral were as follows: Mr. and Mrs. Fredrick [Frederick] Gerard, of Fontanelle, Iowa; Peter Gerard of Nevada, Mo.; Mr. and Mrs. Felix Gerard of Corning, Iowa; Mrs. W. E. Gerard of Rapid City, S.
