Mrs. Rachel Burton Nicoll, daughter of William and Ann Burton, was born in Sabula, Jackson County, Iowa, June 7, 1859 and died at her home, near Mt. Etna, June 26, 1924, at the age of 66 yeas and 19 days.
Funeral services were held in the M. E. Church at Carl, Sunday, conducted by Rev. Clarence Moore. Burial was made in Forest Hill Cemetery.
The mother of Mrs. Nicoll died when the latter was 11 years of age, leaving her father with a large family of small children. Two years later in 1872, the father and his older children moved from Sabula to Adams county and settled on a farm near Lincoln Center, the journey of about 200 miles being made in a covered wagon, taking three weeks to make the trip. The little company did not travel on Sunday. Every Sunday Mr. Burton rested and worshiped with is children. During the last year, Mrs. Nicoll often referred to this memorable journey.
During her school days, Mrs. Nicoll improved her opportunities to obtain an education and taught for a while in the rural schools in Adams County.
In 1881, April 10th, she was united in marriage to Thomas Nicoll, at Briscoe, Adams County, Iowa. To this union were born six children. One son, John, died at the age of five years in 1896. The living children are Agnes Marion and Regland I. at home, who cared for their parents during their mother's failing health; Bess Philena, of Jefferson, Iowa; Thomas Burton of Marshalltown, Iowa and Clifford W. of Kansas City, Missouri. There are also three grandchildren, and Mrs. Nicoll also leaves two brothers and five sisters; Sidney Burton, Lingle Wyoming; William Burton, Blain, Washington; Mrs. Julia Matheson, Cedar City, Utah; Mrs. Rebecca Mills, Mitchell, South Dakota; Mrs. Lauren Crawford, Cameron, Missouri, and Mrs. Kate Dynes, Caroll, Illinois.
She faithfully served the Lord all her life.
Mrs. Nicoll loved her church and united with the M. E. Church in Sabula. Since 1898, the family has lived in Mt. Etna and no one has done more for this M. E. Church there than Mrs. Nicoll. For many years she served the church as Sunday School Superintendent and as a steward. The last day she lived she was rather busy and had no warning of the nearness of death. She laid aside the cares of the day and retired to rest from her labors, not the labor of the day, but to rest from the labors of love and of sacrifice. Quiet, unassuming, ever ready to give assistance to any who needed help, she spent her life in service for others, and has gone to lived with Him who laid down his life for his friends.
