TWO SOLDIER DEATHS
Joe Thuman and Fred Wild Reported Killed in France
Nowadays and Carbon Boys
News comes from France that Joe Thuman, of Nodaway, was killed in battle in France on July 6, 1918. The first account was received in a letter from Phil Newman to his parents, and later Mrs. Don Conway of Corning, received a letter from James Hollis, confirming the statement in the Newman letter. No official word has been received from the government nor has Thuman's name been mentioned on the casualty list.
Joe is a brother of Mrs. Conway. He was a member of Company F, of Villisca, in the 168th infantry, Rainbow division. The young man volunteered when the United States entered the war and went to the front along with the other boys in boys of this county, though in a different company. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Thuman of Nodaway, and one of the young men of this community of whom we are all proud. The letter from Mr. Hollis says that Joe was one of the popular young men in the company, was a fine soldier, and that his death brings much sorrow to the other members of Company F. He was buried by his comrades on the fields of France.
Monday of this week Mr. and Mrs. John Wild of Carbon, received a letter from the chaplain of an American regiment in France informing them of the death of their son, Fred, killed in action on the 29th of July. Fred was raised in Carbon, but at the time of the draft was in Montana, where he registered. He entered the service from that state and not long ago went to France. The engagement in which he was killed was the one in which he had participated.
