Celona Clark was born in Henry County, Iowa, April 30, 1848. She passed away at the Baldwin home west of Brooks, Saturday night, April 20, 1929 aged 80 years, 11 months, and 20 days.
In 1837 she came with her parents Robert M. and Mary E. Clark to Quincy, Iowa where she grew to womanhood. In 1889 Miss Clark was married to Jacob Stait, who died September 1, 1892. She united with the Methodist Church over forty years ago and remained in the faith which piloted her through the last hours of trial and suffering. She was very cheerful in disposition and though having no children of her own, she was a lovely mother and grandmother to a family of orphaned children.
Mrs. Strait is survived by one sister and three brothers. These are Miss Minerva, Stephen, and Lemuel Baldwin of Brooks, and Frank of Los Gatos, California. One brother and five sisters preceded her in death; Naomi, a twin sister, Mrs. Melissa J. Crawford, Mrs. Sarah J. Lawrence, Mrs. Elizabeth A. Tucker, and Mrs. Amanda Lemon.
Funeral services were held at the Baldwin home on Thursday afternoon conducted by Rev. W. C. McClelland and assisted by Rev. Birchard of Brooks. Interment was made in the Baldwin Cemetery on the home place.
Many friends in this community regret the passing of this splendid Christian woman and extended sympathy to the loved ones.
