The death of H. G. Homan, last Friday evening was a shock to the community. The gentleman had been ill with pneumonia for a short time and many knew of his sickness but a few days prior to his death. He was a model citizen, a splendid man and a good neighbor. The funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the M. E. Church, conducted by Rev. Mr. Roper of the Baptist Church, and assisted by all the other local ministers. It was very largely attended, all the business houses in Corning being closed out of respect for the deceased. The following obituary notice, read at the funeral, so effectually covers the life of Mr. Homan that we give it in full.
Horace Greeley Homan was born in Washington Township on the old Homan farm, March 25, 1863 and departed this life Friday evening at 7:15, November 15, 1912, his age being 40 years, 7 months, and 17 days.
His parents came from Indiana in the year of 1856 and homesteaded what is now known as the old Homan farm. It was here that Greeley grew to manhood and resided in the immediate neighborhood for many years.
On February 18, 1901, he was united in marriage to Miss Jennie Hale and to this union were born three children, Millard Greeley, Verda Ellen, and Harley Hale Homan, all of whom with the mother and faithful wife survive their father and husband.
Nearly 12 years ago, Mr. Homan with his family moved to Massena, Iowa, where for seven years he was engaged in the mercantile business. He then purchased the old Homan farm of his father, where he resided until moving to Corning in July 1911. Here he was engaged in business until recently. As a business man, he was highly esteemed, his nobility of character winning to him many friends among the people with whom he came in contact.
His father, Edmund Homan, deputed this life December 13, 1910. The mother, Mrs. Caroline Ellen Homan, now residing in Prescott, survives her son. There were four sisters and seven bothers. This who survive their brother are Mrs. Laura J. Chance of Prescott; Walker J. Homan of Near Carl; Albert of Roswell, New Mexico; Henry of Grand Junction, Colorado; Oscar of near Adams County First Baptist Church; and Mrs. Dora A. Heinlen of Mexico, Missouri. Many near relatives of the husband and wife unite with the family with sympathizing hearts in the sad bereavement.
Near the age of 17 years, Mr. Homan was converted and united with the Adams County First Baptist Church moving to Massena he associated himself with the Baptist Church of that place and for some years served as superintendent of the Sunday School. When returning to the farm, he served in the same capacity in the First Baptist Church. On moving to Corning with his family placed their membership with the Corning Baptist Church, where he was elected as senior devon and Sunday school superintendent. The pen of no writer can tell how he will be missed from this place in the church. He was a wise counsellor and a faithful attendant and supported the church with a willingness that made giving a blessing. He rejoiced in that he had seen his children converted and united with the church and the motto of his home was "Christ is the head of this house, the unseen guest at every meal, the silent listener to every conversation." Mr. Homan seemed to realize that this illness would terminate in his death. To his wife, only a few days ago, he spoke of the sufferings he had borne in silence for some months past, and as the illness became more severe, business matters were properly adjusted, and to his family he spoke of his going. In his last hours he assured his faithful wife and loving children, the attending physician, and nurse of his appreciation for their tender care and loving kindness.
Though assured that with him all was well, it seems hard to give him up. From us hath been taken, a Christian character, a faithful husband, a loving father, a good friend and neighbor.
