LeRoy H. Martin, age 96, of Lenox passed away on Thursday, June 19, at the
Clearview Home. Memorial services were held on June 23rd at the Lenox
Christian Church. Interment was held at the Brooks Cemetery. Memorials
can be given in Roy's name. Memories can be shared with the family on our
website at www.ritchiefuneralhome.com under Obituaries. Arrangements
were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Lenox.
LeRoy Hugh Martin was born November 6, 1911, in Carson, North Dakota to
Otto and Winnifred (Owens) Martin. He attended country school in Carson,
North Dakota. He came to Iowa at the age of twenty-one to find work,
with all of 50 cents in his pocket! The first person he met was Boyd Roland
of Corning. Boyd bought him a meal and gave him a job.
Roy was set up on a blind date with Reva Ann Freshour by her brother.
Two years later, on December 7, 1934, the, couple was united in marriage
in Corning, Iowa. Roy and Reva adopted two brothers, Perry and Dennis.
The couple farmed in the Sharpsburg and Lenox areas for over fifty years.
He later went to work for Tote Systems in Lenox, a position he held for
ten years, retiring from Totes in 1974. After his retirement he did a lot
of handyman work for Denny and Judy Bunch at Bunch Hardware, and others
around town. Roy was an avid gardener, and would often share his harvest.
Roy had been a long-time member of the Lenox Christian Church.
Left to cherish Roy's memory are his son, Dennis Martin of Oskaloosa, Iowa;
three grandchildren, Terri Stevens and husband Troy, Michael Martin and wife
Teri, Daniel Martin and fiance Emily Haugsand; eight greatgrandchildren,
Joshua Rhedin, Dustin Rhedin, Amanda Rhedin, Chelsea Bolinger, Grace
Stevens, Jacob Martin, Tanner Martin, Stephanie Landes; an ex daughter-in-law,
Marilyn Miles, and many friends.
Preceding Roy in death are his parents; his loving wife Reva in 1997; a son,
Perry Bruce; a daughter-in-law, Rhonda; two brothers, Billie and one
at infancy; and five sisters, Mayme, Nellie, Frances, Nora and Luella.
