Funeral services for Ron Wetzel, age 62, of Corning, who died Friday, March 14,
2008, at his home, were held Monday, March 17, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at the Roland-
Ritchie Funeral Home in Corning. Interment was held in the Prairie Rose Cemetery
with military rites accorded by the, Ourcq Post No. 117 of the Corning American
Legion. Memorials can be directed to the Corning Ambulance Service. Memories
can be shared with the family at www.ritchiefuneralhome.com. Arrangements
were entrusted to Roland-Ritchie Funeral Home of Corning.
Ronald Reldon Wetzel was born December 26, 1945, in Creston the son of Cleo
Harlan Wetzel and Dorothy Ellen (Hays) Wetzel. He grew up in Taylor County
where he went to country schools before attending school in Corning, graduating
with the Class of 1965. He enlisted in the United States Air Force, spending four
years in Texas, New Mexico and Ismar, Turkey. After his discharge Ron attended
college, graduating from Iowa State with a degree in Horticulture On December
28, 1969, he was united in marriage to Janet Swartz. The couple had three
children, Dana, Trent and Robyn.
After college graduation, Ron moved to Maquoketa to help build a golf course. In
1973, he moved to Corning where he farmed and was the Greenskeeper for Happy
Hollow Country Club. He was a member of the Iowa Trappers Association and the
Ourcq American Legion Post No. 117 in Corning. Ron enjoyed the outdoors,
trapping, hunting and fishing. He spent time in his garden growing produce,
especially tomatoes which he used to make salsa in the fall.
His family was most important to him, with a 'soft spot' for his granddaughters.
Left to cherish Ron's memory are his parents, Cleo and Dorothy Wetzel of
Gravity; his three children, Dana Stoakes and husband Chris of Omaha, Nebraska;
Trent Wetzel and wife Erin of Corning; Robyn Petersen and husband Ryan of
Papillion, Nebraska; four granddaughters, Danielle, Abigail, Rebecca Wetzel;
and Zoe Petersen; friend, Linda Hughes of Corning; two brothers, Robert
Wetzel and wife Loretta of Corning; and Dwight Wetzel and wife Glenda of
Bedford; a sister, Marcia Nickell and husband Gaylen of Gravity; along with
many other relatives and friends.
Preceding Ron in death are his grandparents.
