The friends of this vicinity were saddened on Saturday evening, April 21, 1923, when it was learned that John M. Margerum had passed to his reward. Mr. Margerum, who has been making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Ben Baker, has been ill for some time, though it was not known the end was near at hand. We are never ready and his death came as a shock to his loved ones. John M. Margerum, son of David Margerum and Nancy Ann Eberly, was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania on March 26, 1848, and departed this life at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ben Baker in Nodaway, Iowa, April 21st, 1923, aged 75 years, and 20 days. When a small child he came with his parents to Lee County, Iowa. After a few years residence there, he removed to Page County and later to Montgomery County, which has since been his home until the past few months which he has spent in the home of his daughter. On April 19, 1867 he was united in marriage to Miss Serilda Elizabeth Spencer, who passed away May 8th, 1911. To this union were born six children, Jennie, Jessie, and Chas, who preceded their father in death, and Lewis of Neche, North Dakota, Mary F. Baker of Nodaway, Nettie M. Boll and an adopted son, Edward E. of Villisca, also five grandchildren and two great grandchildren and two half brothers, Hiram Margerum of Nebraska and George Margerum of Nodaway, besides other relatives and a host of friends. About thirty years ago he united with a rural Christian Church near Stanton, retaining a profound respect for his Maker until the last. Long will the memory of this father last in the minds of those who shared his life or who counted it a privilege to know him as a friend. The many friends of this community extend their sympathy to those bereaved ones in their time of sorrow. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Villisca Advent Church, conducted by Rev. Silas Overholser, pastor of the Nodaway Presbyterian Church. Interment was made in the Villisca Cemetery.
