Orville C. Bassett, 73, longtime Lenox businessman, died Sunday, July 19th. Mr. Bassett had attended the Horse Show Saturday night in Lenox and collapsed while watching the performance. He was taken to Rosary hospital in Corning where he died early Sunday.
Orville C. Bassett, son of Samuel and Jennie Clark Bassett, was born at Oelwein, Fayette County, Iowa, August 14, 1896, and passed away at Rosary Hospital,
Corning, Iowa, July 19th, 1970.
He moved to Corning in 1903 with his parents to a part of what is known as the Old French Colony. He was one of eight children. His eldest brother, Thomas, died
when a small boy, The other brothers were Roy, Earl, and Clarence, who have all preceded him in death. Also one sister, Mrs. Lloyd (Stella) Grecian.
One sister, Mrs. Robert (Gladys) Badgett of Corning, survives him.
On March 10, 1910 he was married to Erma Haviland. One son, Leon, was born to this union. He passed away Nov. 29, 1968.
He leaves to mourn his death his wife, a grandson, John Bassett, wife Laura, and great granddaughter Heather of Phoenix, New York and daughter-in-law, Mary Helen Bassett of Syracuse, New York.
He has been a member of the United Methodist Church since a young boy and served as usher of the Lenox Church for many years. He was a member of Tremont Lodge, No 343, A.F. and A. M. since 1941 and served almost 24 years as treasurer of the Lodge.
The first two years he was married, he farmed at Corning, Iowa, and for the last 45 years was engaged in the shoe repair business in Lenox.
He will be missed by family and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m., with Rev. Floyd Newbrough, pastor of the Methodist Church officiating.
Music was furnished by Norma Payonal.
Masonic rites were given.
Bearers were Elmer Bose, Glen Odson, Dale Purdum, John Borland, Kenneth Black and Robert Remolds,
Burial was in Walnut Grove cemetery at Corning, Iowa.
