Funeral services for Loyd F. Bowers, who died Saturday, November 14, 1953 in the Sunnyslope Sanatorium at Ottumwa were held in Villisca on Tuesday afternoon at the Sutphen Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. M. A. Robbeson and the Rev. Wm. Niles.
The singing was by Cecil Weaver accompanied by Mrs. Frances Gray. Mrs. Mary Kernen and Mrs. Florence Cornwall were in charge of the flowers. Pall bearers were Clarence Gile, Henry Kernen, Raymond Brees, Jerry Ervin, Russell Sundstrom, and John Jones. Interment was in the Nodaway Cemetery.
Loyd F. Bowers, son of Fletcher and Bertha Bowers was born May 22, 1888 near Brooks, Iowa. When he was 5 years old the family moved to Brooks and he graduated from the Brooks school and also attended the Corning academy. He then went to Villisca where he was associated with his grandfather, the late Samuel Beveridge in the produce business for a number of years.
On July 13, 1911, he was married to Mabel Agnew and to this union one daughter, Helen Lucile was born.
He was engaged in both the grocery and men's clothing business in Villisca with Homer Gile. After that he farmed, then he and his brother-in-law, Art Agnew ran a service station in Nodaway. for the last 10 years of his business life, he was in the real estate and insurance business in Corning.
He had been in failing health for a number of years and became seriously ill in January 1952. He spent 11 months in the sanatorium at Ottumwa and because of a nervous breakdown was brought to his home in Villisca where he was cared for for 9 months. On October 3, he returned to the sanatorium where he died November 14, at the age of 65 years.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and Masonic Lodge of Nodaway. He leaves his wife, Mabel and daughter, Mrs. Helen Ball of Detroit, Michigan, son-in-law Donald Ball, two granddaughters, Nancy and Mary Lou Ball, a sister, Mrs. Frances Tugel of Brooks, and a brother John Bowers of Corning.
