Charles Baron Dewees, son of Angeline and Greenbery Dewees, was born May 12, 1861 at Amestown, Ohio and died March 20, 1947 at 6:15 p.m. at the home of his youngest daughter, Mrs. Bertha Simmons at 305 13th Street, Corning, Iowa. He was 86 years and 8 days old. He was one of nine children, all of whom preceded him in death with the exception of two, Albert and Mrs. Blanche Cochrane, both of Corning.
He was united in marriage to Emma Johnson in Ohio in 1885 and to this union were born three children and survive, Harry of Corning, Harvey of Creston, and Mrs. Mae Scott of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
After losing his wife in death, he came with his three small children to Adams County in 1890 and has since made this his home.
He was married to Minnie Thompson in 1892 and to this union eleven children were born, three of whom passed away in infancy. They were Amy, Phoebe, and Ida. The eldest surviving are Clarence of Knoxville Vet Hospital, Flossie Birkenes, Minnesota, Ralph, Kansas City, Missouri, Gladys Cloutier, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Velma Cretors, Des Moines, Bertha Simmons and George both of Corning; Private Ernest LaVern DeWees gave his life for his country in World War II, May 2, 1942. He also leaves 15 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
For many years he contracted cellar digging. He was a kind loving father and will be greatly missed by all.
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 23, in Boyd Roland Funeral Home at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. V. A. Bloomquist. Interment was in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
