Funeral services for Mrs. Shirley Whitworth, 79 of Spencer will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 23, 2009, at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. Rev. Paul Hansen is in charge of arrangements.

Public visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Friday at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer. There will be a time of coffee and fellowship following the graveside services at the Ben Tena Room at Grace United Methodist Church.

Interment will take place at Riverside Cemtery in Spencer.

Mrs. Whitworth passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at Spencer Hospital.

Shirley Jean Whitworth, the daughter of Theodore R. and Nola (Lovely) Speed, was born Oct. 16, 1929 in Greenfield. Her childhood years were spent in Calumet, where she attended grade school and later Rippey & then Greenfield, where her family moved. She graduated from Greenfield High School and later Drake University.

Shirley married George Whitworth on May 25, 1952 in Greenfield. Following their marriage, they lived in the communities of Griswold and Clarion, before moving to Spencer in 1967. While in Spencer, Shirley taught elementary school for 35 years, until her retirement in 1987. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. Shirley was also active with the AAUW, the Clef Club, Delta Kappa Gamma and was a choir member at the church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George on May 11, 1991; and one brother, Dallas.

Shirley is survived by two sisters: Beverly Speed of Spencer, and Margery Raymond of Pinkney, Mich.

Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.
