From the Adair County Free Press: Mrs. Martha Harris Dies December 4. Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Harris, 87, were held Monday afternoon 2 o'clock at the Bickford Funeral Home in Greenfield. Rev. R. A. McBlain, Methodist pastor, conducted the services. Music was furnished by: Mrs. Lois Lambi and P. L. Bickford. The selections were: "Beautiful Isle" and "Beckoning Hands." Those serving as casketbearers were: Four grandsons: Donald, Howard, and Dale Welch and Gaylord Harris, also Clark Williams and Emmett Wood. Burial took place in the Stuart cemetery. Martha Jane Moyers Harris, daughter of Anderson T. and Lizzie Key Moyers, was born on October 19, 1866 in Putnam County, Indiana and died at the Garwood Nursing Home, Dexter, Iowa, Friday night, December 4, 1953, at the age of 87 years, 1 month, and 15 days. When a small child, she moved with her parents in a covered wagon to Boone County, Iowa where she received her schooling. On March 21, 1888, she was united in marriage with Henry Fillmore Harris of Stuart, establishing their home on a farm in Harrison Township, Adair County, Iowa. To this union were born three children: Walter A., Della I., and Howard F. Mr. Harris passed away August 26, 1919. She then made her home with her son Walter on a farm in Harrison Township until 1928, when she moved to Greenfield. Walter died on September 20, 1929. She was a kind and loving mother and an understanding grandmother. She was always willing to help others in need. She was a member of the Fairview Christian Church and after moving to Greenfield attended the local Methodist church as long as she was able. On August 29, 1953, she fell at her home in Greenfield and suffered a broken hip. She was taken to the Adair County Memorial Hospital, where she remained until she was moved to the Garwood Nursing Home on November 28, 1953. Her condition was never good, and she became gradually weaker until the end. She leaves to mourn her departure: her daughter, Della I. Welch of Lorimor; her son, Howard F. Harris of Greenfield; her son-in-law, Henry Welch; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Alice Harris and Mrs. Lettie Harris; one sister, Mrs. Minnie Wallace of Boone. Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Iola E. Harris of Des Moines; Donald Welch of Winterset; Howard Welch of Greenfield: Dale Welch in the army, stationed at Detroit; Irene Welch of Des Moines; Gaylord Harris and Norma Harris of Greenfield; and two great granddaughters, Debbie Lee and Kathy Ann Welch of Greenfield; one niece Mrs. Ethel Bunce of Stuart, and one nephew, Albert Fleming of Garner; and a host of friends and relatives. One sister, Mrs. Clara Fleming, preceded her in death.
