Mrs Phebe Winn Dead
She died at her home in Bridgewater after an Illness of eleven years.
From Adair County Democrat,, Greenfield Iowa, June27, 1895
Mrs. Phebe Winn beloved wife of Monroe Winn died at her home near Bridgewater June 20, 1895, aged fifty nine years and four days.
Nearly eleven years ago Mrs Winn fell from a buggy and sustained injuries of the spine which caused nervous trouble. At first her injuries were thought to be slight and the lapse of time would finally beat the wound and she would be restored to health but contray to the wishes of her faithfull husband and many friends she grew gradually worse and during the latter years of her sickness her mind became affected. For the past two years it has been a surprise to her many friends who witnessed her suffering that she could live so long and the only reason that can be given for such struggle with death was an inheritance of vitality she aquired from her parents, her mother having lived to the unusual age of 104 years dying two years ago at her home in Coles County Illinois a notice of which appeared in this paper at the time of her death.
Mrs Phebe Winn was born in the State of North Carolina June16, 1836. she was married to her husband, who survives her on June 20, 1855, dying upon the fortieth anniversary of her marriage. She with her husband moved to Iowa and Adair County in 1856 and for the last thirty years has lived on their farm four and a half miles south of Bridgewater, where she died a week ago today.
She leaves her faithful husband who has watched over her with tender care and for the past eleven years has done all in his power tp soften her pillow of suffering and up to the time of life went out has used his best means to beat back the angel of death. Two daughters, Mrs Henry Hull of Corning and Mrs Henry Garner of Orient and five sons all grown, one living in Kansas, one in California, the others here are left to mourn over a loving with and mother. (Just as it was in obituary)
Funeral services were held on Sunday June 23, conducted by Rev. Henry Griffen, an old friend and neighbor. The services were held in the grove near the house which was previously arranged with seats for the occasion and not withstanding the storm Sunday morning and bad condition of the roads, a large crowd sympathizing friends gathered to show their respect to the dead and comfort the bereaved. At the conclusion of the services the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery on the farm near the home where for thirty years she performed the part of wife and mother, the blessings of which hid the burden of responsibility.
