Oren Bowen was born January 12, 1885, the son of George and Amelia (Espy) Bowen. He was married on March 9, 1910, to Lula Maud Shanklin, born October 8, 1885, daughter of Robert Erasmus, born January 30, 1863, and Carrie Elizabeth (Saffer) Shanklin, born March 6, 1859. Lula's grandfather, Gordon S. Shanklin, operated a creamery in Section 36, Grand River Township. The Bowens were farmers in Lee Township.

Their children and birth dates are: Robert George, February 26, 1911; Carrie Amelia, February 18, 1913; Chester Levi, January 24, 1915; Thelma, March 3, 1918, and passed away March 6, 1918; Mildred Evelyn, October 5, 1919; and Donald Ralph, April 25, 1922.

Robert married Gladys Schrader on February 16, 1938. Their son, Gary Glenn, died at birth. Their son, Gaylord Francis, born March 20, 1942, married Susan Keck of Maquoketa, Iowa and they have Kimberly.

Amelia married Paul Brockman on April 3, 1938. Their children are: Joy Elizabeth, born June 29, 1941; and Marcella Irene (adopted), born October 11, 1944. Joy married Larry Standley (their children: Ted LaVerne, who was born October 7, 1959; Patti Jo Ann, born March 19, 1961; Monte Larry, born May 31, 1964; and Randy Joe, born March 20, 1966). Marcella married Dean Greenwalt (their children): Misty Leigh, born in October 1962, and lived only six days; Deana Leann, born January 18, 1964; and Daniel Dean, born November 22, 1965). She was divorced and married Donald L. Wilson. Their child, Paul Jay, was born October 30, 1971.
