The showplace residence of Waterloo belonged to the George Snowden family and was built on land once owned by Rensselaer Russell. Originally hailing from Pittsburgh, Captain George Snowden, opened a drug store and stationery business which he operated with great success until 1903. As this home was hard to heat, they moved out every winter. The family moved to California upon the death of Captain Snowden and the residence was transferred to Lillian Russell Lamson, daughter of Rensselaer Russell and the wife of Clyde O Lamson.

Rensselaer Russell family home, located on the corner of West Third and South Street, was one of the oldest homes still standing in Black Hawk County. It was built in 1861 for a cost of $6,000. Photo courtesy of Leonard Katoski
