| Excerpt from Years To Remember, Chapter IV - Cemeteries, page 37: "February 1938, Father N. U. Keffeler was pastor of St. Patrick's Catholic church, Watkins, Iowa. St. Paul's Catholic church of Newhall, Iowa, was his out mission.
In February 1938 Father Keffeler, as pastor; William Oberreuter and Clayton Schmidt, as trustees for the Watkins parish; Joe G. Boddicker and Joe A. Boddicker, as trustees for the Newhall parish, organized the Cemetery Association for the Watkins and Newhall parishes, to be known as "St. Patrick-St.Paul Cemetery Association, Watkins, Iowa". On or about April 15, 1938, they purchased one acre of ground from John Martin for $150. This one acre is described as follows: The South 175.2 feet of the West 300 feet of the Southeast quarter (SE 1/4) of the northeast quarter (NE 1/4) of section 23, St. Clair Township, Benton County, Iowa. The cemetery was laid out in burial lots size 10 feet by 20 feet to permit six graves." |
