The Benton County Genealogical Society (BCGS) was organized May 10, 1997 and is a Chapter of the Iowa Genealogical Society. The BCGS's purposes and goals are to create and foster an interest in genealogy, to gather and preserve genealogical and historical data, to aid individuals in their genealogical research, to establish and maintain a genealogy library, to publish a newsletter and to improve the availability and access to the Benton County public records.
You are invited to join the Benton County Genealogical Society and help support the efforts being made for the genealogical and historical interests of Benton County, Iowa. If you would like to become a member, please send your name, address, and dues to the address provided below. Membership dues are $10.00 per individual or $15.00 per family. The Society has applied to the state of Iowa for a non-profit organization, Internal Revenue Service classification. Gifts, contributions, and bequests will be tax deductible. Members will meet the first Wednesday of each month at the Belle Plaine Public Library at 7pm.
The BCGS published their first newsletter in June. "The Benton County Backtracker" is published quarterly and contains genealogical research data as well as news about the activities and projects of the society. This newsletter is sent to all members of the society and queries are included free of charge.
Our volunteers are willing to do Benton County research for you. Fees are $5/hour for members and $7/hour for non-members. Expenses can include the cost of copies and any excess postage. Please send a minimum fee of one hour (for basic research) with the request so that the volunteer will have an idea of how much research time is desired. Don't forget to include a self-addressed stamped, legal sized envelope.
The BCGS is currently compiling cemetery records of Benton County cemeteries for publication with IGS. If you would like to help in this massive project, contact us for typing guidelines and where to begin.
BCGS is currently compiling church membership records of Benton County churches up through 1979 for publication with IGS. Please let us know if you are interested in helping.
We would like to collect a four generations pedigree on each and every member of BCGS. If we can complete a file on our members, this would be an amazing research tool when others come to our library for information. Someday we would even like to store this information on computer for quick reference, but we are resorting to the proven way of paper and files for now.
Donations to the building fund are greatly appreciated, along with with any time donated to our current and future projects that will help us raise the money for our building. Several people and businesses of Benton County and the surrounding counties have already donated many items for the new BCGS library. Books, Benton Co. court records, book shelves, a microfilm reader, file cabinets, and numerous other items. We are accumulating materials so fast that we no longer have any place to put them!
The Blairstown Public Library is currently storing the BCGS research materials. Just tell the librarian that you wish to see the records.
