She had been ill 7 days.

Alice McCord, age 9/12, female, born IA. She died of a sore throat
and she had been ill one day.

This was taken off schedule 3 persons who died during the year ending June 1, 1860, Newport, Co. of Johnson, State of Iowa.

I received a letter from the Clerk of District Court in Iowa City July 1993 that stated that the record's that they have in Johnson Cty. Did not start until 1880 and they could not find a death on Samuel McCord

I have a letter that is in Samuel's file that is from the Iowa City Genealogical Society dated July 2, 1993 that was in response to my request for cemetery information for Samuel McCord and his daughters Almira and Alice. The letter states " The cemetery gravestone record for Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Washington Twp. of Johnson Cty. shows Samuel McCord age 69 years 1 month and 22 days died May 9, 1886. The gravestone in Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City, Johnson Cty. Iowa shows Lavina McCord b 1860 died 1860. I suspect that Alice is also buried beside Lavina because both ere young and would require little grave space” Oakwood Cemetery is a large cemetery in the NE part of Iowa City. This letter is in Samuel McCord’s file.

We have the probate records of Samuel McCord property, Johnson Co., IA. At the time of Samuel McCord's death it is mentioned in the records that there were three infant children.

I have a letter from the Office of the Recorder, Johnson Cty. IA dated December 29, 1994 and it states that they were unable to locate another deed for Samuel McCord than the one we already have. They searched the records from 1845-1865. 1845 is when the records begin and in 1863 is when the Deed in Book 21 page 323 was recorded.

April 12 1995 I received a letter from the Iowa City Genealogical Society in reply for my request to find an obituary on Samuel McCord. It stated that he had never seen an obituary for deaths as early back as the e1860's and the obits do not appear in any number until after 1900, He did try to find records of burials in Pleasant View Cemetery and could find none but for the stone readings. He also stated that he could not find any family information in the probate. He stated that the widow in her closing report on the estate dated De. 27 ____ (probably 1863) mentions "three infant children" It is possible children were born between the 1860 census and the time of Samuel's death in 1863 (I have not found anything to back that statement up. He also states that there is a marriage record in Johnson Cty. that Ellen McCord married A. W. Blain 12 Feb 1874. End of letter. This letter is in Samuel McCord's file.

Notes for HATTIE EMMA HUYCK:
In a book found at Fort Wayne, IN public library entitled "Audubon County" it shows Hattie Huyck as High School Alumni of 1896 class with two other students listed in class. I have a copy of this in her (Hattie Huyck McCord) file.

In Hattie's obituary: Dated October 4 1906 (Audubon County Journal)
Harriet E. McCord Died at the Home of Her Parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Huyck, interment at Exira, Monday. Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Huyck was born at Exira, Iowa on the 21st day of August 1879. She died on Saturday, the 29th day of September 1906, age 27 years, 1 month and 8 days. When thirteen years old, under the preaching of Elder Joseph Walters, she confessed her faith in the Savior and was baptized and together with her mother became a member of the Christian Church. On the 2nd day of June 1896 having completed her studies, she graduated from the high school in Exira and for one year devoted herself to teaching. She was married to Mr. Charles McCord on the 20th day of March 1901. Two Children gladdened their union -one died in infancy. She was born, married and died at the home of her parents west of Exira. Mrs. McCord was taken seriously ill about four months ago and from that time until the morning of her death she was a great sufferer. The only time since then that she felt strong enough to go out in public was last Decoration Day when she rode to the cemetery and assisted in covering with flowers the graves of the old soldiers. She came to her childhood home on the 16th if June little that she would never leave the shelter of it's roof until she was carried to the tomb. As a Christian she was a faithful prayerful, consecrated. As a daughter obedient and dutiful. As a sister and wife and mother, loyal and loving. During her illness she was ever hopeful, anxious to recover for the sake of her husband and son-yet fully resigned and submissive to the Divine Will. "Knowing that all things"death as Well as life" worked together for good of them that love God, who are the called according to his purpose." Realizing that the end was near, while yet in the full possession of all her faculties she called for her father and mother, brothers and sisters, as also her husband together that she might bid them all good bye. Last of all she called her son, the pride and darling of her heart, and putting her arms about him, gave him her parting blessing. Her end was peace. She has passed and passed up to dwell with god forever. Beside her parents and little boy she leaves an affectionate husband, three sisters and two brothers together with a circle of friends to mourn her departure and while they sorrow, "yet they sorrow not as those ho have no hope" for their faith assures them in reference to their well beloved, that for her” to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord"

The funeral services were held at the Christian Church last Tuesday afternoon at 2 PM, the pastor Elder H. A. Pallister addressing the immediate relatives and the large congregation gathered to manifest their fellowship with the bereaved from the words found in the 13th and 14th verses of the 4th chapter of Thessalonians "I would not have you to be ignorant brethren concerning those who are asleep, that ye sorrow not as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again even so them also who sleep in Jesus died and rose again even so them also who sleep in Jesus will God bring with him” After which the remains were taken to the Exira cemetery and laid to rest. `

We also have a prayer card that was given at the funeral of Hattie Huyck McCord. Both that and her obituary are in her file Hattie Huyck McCord.

In the Cass County Democrat date October 11, 1906: MRS. CHAS. MCCORD DEAD Mrs. Charles McCord or Atlantic died of quick consumption Saturday at the home of her parents Mrs. and Mrs. Huyck of Exira. Deceased leaves to mourn her loss a husband and one child 4 years old, father, mother and other relatives besides many friends. (This is in Hattie Huyck McCord's file)
