Van Coulee School

Van Coulee School is located at 2368 Hwy. 26 Lansing, Iowa; between New Albin and Lansing on the property currently owned by Ed Staheli.  This one-room schoolhouse, circa 1900, was also used as a Sunday School in its early days.

Caroline Reed Report Card, 1891

Report of Carrie Reed
for month ending June 5th, 1891
Tillie Bench, Teacher

This report card belonged to my Great-Great Grandmother Caroline Elizabeth (Reed) Cooper. While it does not have the school's name or number on the card, I believe she attended school at the Van Coulee school.

School Notes - Lansing No. 6
Helen Bieber, Teacher

Our school closed Friday, April 19, with a picnic dinner which was well attended by parents and friends.

Tuesday we took advantage of the lovely sunshine and raked the school yard.

Elsie Dahly of the Lansing Public School did her three days of practice teaching in our school two weeks ago.

Everyone was grateful to Everett McKee for the delicious birthday cake which he treated us to April 11.

We had a pleasant visit from Miss McCormick April 9. She spoke to the seventh grade about examinations in spelling, hygiene and geography which they will write in May.

School Notes - Lansing No. 6
Helen Bieber, Teacher

Our second period of school came to a close Nov. 15. The following pupils were neither absent nor tardy: Everett, Edwin, Laila, Aletha and Cyril McKee, Margaret and Dorothy Stabe, Lorraine Sweatt, Ervin Van Brocklin, Ruth Reed, Ralph Hammell and Roy McGeough.

We were sorry to lose Raymond and Dorothy Tippery, who have moved to Prairie du Chien, Wis.

Our two beginners are: Roy McGeough and Beryl Sires.

Phyllis Van Brocklin had perfect spelling lessons during the past period.

So far this year, our visitors have been Mr. Moeller, Mrs. Whalen and Pearl Sires.
